ABSTRACT

The Queensland University of Technology (QUT) Design Lab aims to be the nurturing ecosystem that incubates new research groups and fosters their growth until they reach critical mass and produce impact. Urban informatics was used as our “departmental” affiliation in addition to mentions of our faculty and university. The Urban Informatics Research Lab became a tested for honing the skill of conducting interdisciplinary research studies, as it requires a broad perspective across the triad of people, place and technology, and the associated disciplines of the social sciences; computer sciences; and spatial sciences. The group’s transdisciplinarity reflects the field’s increasing demand for transdisciplinarity, which requires dissolving the rigid boundaries between disciplinary silos. The author experience founding and setting up the QUT Design Lab in 2016 proved again that genuine research culture takes time and is greater than the sum of its parts.
