Private clinics that offer the procedure, which is legal in the United Kingdom, do not collect data on the number of women who have undergone the procedure, but it is estimated that approximately 9000 women searched for the procedure on Google in 2019. The vascular supply of the hymen is rich, especially near the free edge, where vessels are dilated and engorged. The hymen is presumed to be broken during the first sexual intercourse, and its intact condition is believed to represent virginity. The aim of the surgery is to produce a narrowing of the introital opening with temporary tightening, which can be obtained in many ways. Wei and colleagues went a bit further, considering adhesions techniques as transient because of frequently occurring dehiscence, resulting from the bloodless nature of the hymen. Vaginal flap hymenoplasty is based on vaginal mucosal flaps raised from the anterior vaginal wall just behind labia minora.
