ABSTRACT

Hydrogen has the potential to become an alternative fuel for sustainable development. This chapter focuses on the two major issues of the hydrogen economy: the storage and production of hydrogen. The source of energy that can be used for the production of hydrogen is summarized in this chapter. Today, steam reforming is the commercial method for production of hydrogen, but it produces greenhouse gas (e.g., carbon dioxide). To make the steam methane reforming method, sustainable CO2 must be captured. The cost of CO2 captured is reviewed in this chapter. The method of hydrogen storage in its gaseous and liquid forms is reviewed along with the feasibility of the method for transportation application. The gravimetric capacity of metal hydride storage and pressured cylinder storage are reviewed under the heading of different storage methods. The fuel cell and internal combustion engine can be used for the generation of power from hydrogen.
