ABSTRACT

Self-compacting concrete (SCC) is an important innovation in the concrete industry, which eliminates the need of compaction due to its high fluid nature. Its fluidity is achieved by the use of superplasticizers and by increasing the fines with the use of mineral additives like fly ash, silica fume, ground granulated blast furnace slag etc. In this study silica fume of 7.5% by weight of cement was used. Percentage of coir fiber is varied as 0%, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5% and 2%. Slump flow test, J-ring test,V-funnel test and L-box tests were conducted on fresh concrete. Hardened concrete was then tested for compressive strength, split-tensile strength and flexural strength. The durability of concrete was evaluated using sulphate attack test and water absorption test. SCC with 0.5% of coir fiber showed improved results with respect to its mechanical and durability properties.
