ABSTRACT

Utilization of appropriate construction materials and effective management will largely help the successful completion of the structure. Material waste has been recognized as a major problem in the construction industry that has important implications both for the efficiency of the industry and for the environmental impact of construction projects. However, this problem can be minimized by introducing systematic planning and management of construction wastes. Moreover, waste measurement plays an important role in the management of production systems since it is an effective way to assess their performance, allowing areas of potential improvement to be pointed out. This paper investigates the profile of waste generation from different construction sites and involves the creation of a tool which can assess the loss due to material wastage in a construction project for effective waste management. The information from the tool over subsequent time periods can be used as the basis for creation and implementation of suitable solutions for waste minimization at the site.
