ABSTRACT

Structural health monitoring (SHM) relies on data acquired from sensorial systems installed on a site for asset management and to detect damage in early stage. In most of the sensors the physical or chemical changes in the structure creates a change in the signals of the sensors and these signals are studied and converted to get actual results in terms of strain, displacement, temperature etc. Use of sensors in the SHM is to detect the damages, but the mechanism, calibration, accuracy and detection of the responds are important in civil engineering aspect. Many types of sensors are available in the market for different applications and mode of monitoring. Commonly used sensors for SHM are, Strain sensors, Piezoelectric Sensors, Fiber Optic Sensors, Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors, Accelerometers, Temperature Sensors, RFID Sensors, Seismometers, and Load Cells.
