ABSTRACT

Cuckoo Search Optimization Algorithm is proposed in this paper to get the optimized values of parameters for setting Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) and Power System Stabilizer (PSS) in a two area power system for improving the small signal stability. PSS has been used to add damping to electro-mechanical oscillations in order to maintain stable modes of operation. AVR as a control system will stabilizes generator output voltage. This improves the overall performance of the power system. Essentially, the parameters of AVR and PSS are tuned to shift the positive eigenvalues of the system to the left half of the complex plane. The Small Signal Stability of a system is analyzed with the help of MATLAB Toolbox PSAT (Power System Analysis Toolbox). Method is illustrated using an example.
