ABSTRACT

There is an urgent need for safe food, devoid of any naturally/intentionally added adulterant and it, is the right of every individual. But increase in food-borne disease outbreaks and various episodes of intentional adulteration have raised worldwide concern. Food adulteration has a great impact on societal, political, and economical aspects of a nation. Moreover, it has the worst effect on human health in terms of food toxicity. The toxic effects of adulterants can result in serious and chronic ailments.

Food safety is governed by several food regulations and legislations that include countrywise rules as well as joint regulations. Tardy enforcement of these regulations results in increase of food adulteration. In this chapter, all issues related to type and toxicity of food adulterants, Food Acts and regulations as well as patents granted for rapid detection methods are discussed.
