ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the effects that environment and location have on the nature of a sex scene. While there is no “wrong” place to have sex (arguably!), there is a fundamental difference to the mood of making love in a luxurious boudoir vs. a quickie in a rainy alley. Aspects of environmental design that affect the impact of a sex scene include the following:

Setting of the location, e.g., historical, modern, fantasy, and sci-fiNature of the setting (e.g., bedroom, roof, closet)Whether it’s a character’s private space (and includes their personal effects?) or a public spaceSize, lighting, materials and texturesWhether the location is specially made for the scene, or if it’s used throughout the game.

Environmental storytelling can use these elements to set a mood, reveal more of a character, build on the sensuality of a scene, or provide interesting blocking for the action. The workshops encourage players to take special note of where sex scenes take place, both in their work and in existing games.
