ABSTRACT

This chapter covers some of the myths and pushback against using sex in video games. It challenges the idea that sex is inappropriate for video games (and the history behind those attitudes in events like the Fox News controversy over Mass Effect), but also the idea that sex is unnecessary or “cheapens” the experience, or that it is inherently awkward. It also challenges the sex-negative demonization of titillation, and the assumption that only straight male players enjoy it, while also acknowledging some of the larger cultural baggage behind both. The chapter ends with additional questions regarding the games the reader is analyzing/creating – how the myths affect the content in question, etc.
