ABSTRACT

Building archaeology is fundamental in every conservation plan. Specific information about building phases, construction methods, and historical materials is key when it comes to decision making and prioritising. This paper discusses the definition, terminology, and history of the building archaeological discipline in the Netherlands. More specific, the paper provides an overview of how building archaeology is embedded in monument conservation policy in Leiden—a city in the Netherlands that has a medieval core and that flourished during the seventeenth century.
