ABSTRACT

The world of environmental engineering science and water process engineering is today full of avenues for newer scientific regeneration. Membrane science and novel separation processes need to be re-envisioned and deeply re-envisaged with every step of scientific history and time. Nanotechnology has links with diverse branches of science and engineering today. In this chapter, the author deeply focuses on the application of forward osmosis, nanofiltration, and other avenues of nanotechnology to the vast domain of water purification. Water purification encompasses drinking water treatment as well as industrial wastewater treatment. Environmental sustainability and its varied applications are elucidated in great details in this chapter. Human civilization’s immense scientific prowess and Mankind’s girth and determination will all lead to a long and effective way in the true emancipation and true realization of sustainable development, which includes energy, environmental, social, and economic 136development. Water treatment and industrial pollution control today stands in the midst of immense vision and deep scientific introspection. The challenges and the vision of water treatment and nanotechnology are discussed in minute details in this chapter. The author also focuses on forward osmosis, which is a new avenue of scientific endeavor. In a nutshell, the author elucidates on the vast application of environmental sustainability to the future of human civilization and human scientific progress. There are other areas of scientific endeavor, such as carbon nanotubes applications in water treatment, which the author has discussed in details.
