ABSTRACT

As the livestock production currently accounts for about 43% of the gross value of agricultural production and the growing demand for livestock products as a result of increasing population and urbanization is one of the major factors responsible for the balanced growth of the livestock sector. Biotechnology refers to the set of techniques by which living creatures are altered for the benefit of humans and other animals. This technique has the potential to improve animal production and productivity and to alter the functional, nutritional, and therapeutic value. In this contribution, we focus on biotechnological approaches in the field of genetic engineering, animal health and nutrition, animal breeding and genetics, and livestock products of assured safety and quality to public health. We review here some of the current trends of biotechnology interventions for improvement of products of animal origin and constrains in its applications.
