ABSTRACT

The use of RWD address questions related to public health and policy that cannot be answered with data from clinical trials is garnering increased interest. Data from cancer registries and associated diagnosis and treatment records may provide unique insights into patients, treatments and outcomes of oncology practice on the population level. In this chapter, we introduced several commonly used cancer statistics for measuring the cancer burden and the progress against cancer. The incidence, mortality, and survival derived from the population-based cancer registry data are representative for the general population and provide the RWE of the impact of cancer. We described visualization and statistical methods, e.g., the micro-linked map and the joinpoint model, for the analysis and presentation of cancer statistics. An illustrative example for small cell lung cancer survival shows that the RWD from the population-based cancer registry may supplement the information from clinical trials to inform the long-term survival extrapolation for cancer patients.
