ABSTRACT

This chapter presents several major emerging low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) technologies which can be used by Internet of Things (IoT) and Machine-to-machine applications. It introduces unique heterogeneous LPWAN network standards and design techniques that can be used to develop effective and reliable IoT networks for various applications. LPWAN deployments can also be performed by existing low-power networking standards by carefully designing multi-hop mesh networks. The SigFox is another proprietary LPWAN technology developed for long-range IoT networks. Bidirectional packet transmissions are often required in sensor/ actuator and many IoT applications. The chapter discusses the performance of the proposed IoT heterogeneous area network and the effectiveness of the proposed blank burst (BB) algorithm. Comparing the packet success rate values of the heterogeneous network with and without the BB signaling algorithm results show that the BB signaling algorithm significantly increases the throughput.
