ABSTRACT

262This chapter provides an overview of clinical applications of Electrical Impedance Tomography with a specific emphasis on cancer imaging applications. The rationale for using EIT for cancer imaging in terms of the reported contrast mechanisms between benign and malignant tissues is introduced. This is followed by a summary of EIT technologies developed for breast, prostate, and other anatomic sites (lung, cervix); the focus of these summaries is on the anatomy- and application-specific hardware and reconstruction algorithms used and the clinical data collected and analyzed with these systems. Much of the section on breast imaging has been adopted from the 1st edition of this book with several updates made to reflect recent research and clinical studies undertaken in this space [ 484 ].
