ABSTRACT

The scientific development of thoracic EIT in humans relied on translational research performed on experimental animals, especially swine. However, in the veterinary field anesthetists were the first ones to recognize EIT's potential for use in clinical research in other species such as horses, which are too large for conventional lung imaging techniques. Active research in this field began just over a decade ago. Today, research and clinical utilization of EIT in veterinary medicine is still in its infancy, and veterinary-specific literature is scant, in comparison to human medicine.
