ABSTRACT
The main physiological role of the lungs is to secure the exchange of respiratory gases, oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2), between the body and the surrounding atmosphere. Lungs are the essential part of the respiratory system. They consist of air conducting airways, the respiratory tissue, where the transfer of O2 and CO2 between air and blood takes place, and the blood conducting vessels.
