ABSTRACT

The task of a generator relies on the protection level of the stator and rotor windings and mechanical power that act on the various segments of the machine and sudden changes in the ambient temperature of the environment where a generator is installed. These factors have necessitated the application of protective devices in the generator since a protection system is very important for the efficient and safe operation of a power system. The main objective of utilizing protective devices in a generator is to ensure that the machine does not incur any physical damage and to keep the operating team in a safe protected environment. Apart from this, a generator is protected by several protective devices owing to the fact that a single fault has many catastrophic effects on the optimal operation of a power system. The protective devices remove faults as soon as possible from the power system; otherwise, the faults may cause permanent damage in the generator. The protection system includes numerous devices that work in conjunction with other components of the generators for the optimal operation of a power system to be achieved. Appropriate utilization of the protection system guarantees reliable and safe operation of a generator.
