ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces substation automation and control in modern power systems. The benefits and factors that should be considered in the design and implementation of substation automation systems (SASs) are given. The IEC 61850 standard as a facilitator for achieving modern nonproprietary automation and control in smart grids, together with the approaches for IEC 61850 object and service modelling, are also discussed. The application of the standardized configuration language in the engineering of IEC 61850-based systems is described. Two redundancy protocols adopted for use in power system automation are also presented.
