ABSTRACT

Stochastic Diffusion Search (SDS), originally published in 1989, is the first Swarm Intelligence metaheuristic. This paper presents a brief description of the standard SDS algorithm. Next, some of SDS applications are briefly summarised based on their domains. Then, some modifications to the algorithm are presented which include recruitment strategies, agents initialisation, process termination criteria and partial function evaluation. Finally the paper is concluded by providing a real-world problem of identifying metastasis in bone scans using SDS. For this purpose, the algorithm is adopted and applied to this medical imaging problem.
