ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a total of 324 plant species belonging to 100 families used by the Tharu community in Nepal. Safe, effective and inexpensive indigenous remedies are gaining popularity and communities in Nepal are practicing the use of medicinal plants to treat a variety of ailments. The ethnobotanical knowledge of Tharu is scattered in different literatures. The government should update such policy which will be helpful to preserve the traditional healing practices of the several ethnic communities, including the Tharus of Nepal. Tharu people are a native ethnic group who have lived in the lowlands for centuries and developed a distinct and self-sufficient society with their own language, religion and culture. Monogamous marriage system has been practiced among the Tharu people. The Tharu communities of Nepal have been using different parts of plants as medicine. Medicinal plants are widely used in the Tharu communities to treat common ailments.
