ABSTRACT

Performance-based design includes all the features needed for a high-quality tunnel. A holistic approach is used for the performance-based design in order to provide a useful framework for analyzing and sizing tunnels and underground structures. In the following paper, some general remarks are presented and the holistic approach for performance-based design of tunnels will be presented. For this reason, not only the ultimate limit state, serviceability verifications and durability aspects are included, but also robustness, fire resistance und sustainability. Some examples of the performance-based design approach for the Brenner Base Tunnel, the world’s-longest tunnel, will be described.
