ABSTRACT

Periodic inspection is needed for the maintenance of tunnel and increase of service life. Traditional inspection is operated manually and low-efficient. Besides, human error tends to produce inaccurate results. This paper presents a fast tunnel inspection system based on a mobile vehicle, composed of machine vision detection and ground penetrating radar (GPR) for the detection of visible and invisible defects of tunnel structure respectively. The inspection system enables continuous and highly-detailed measurements at a speed up to 40km/h without interrupting the traffic. A method is also developed for the rapid automatic extraction of defect features. The fast record and assessment of defects greatly improve the efficiency of inspection and minimize manual intervention. Finally, the inspection results and assessment of defects in a road tunnel are provided in this paper.
