ABSTRACT
All possible planning and protective measures are being taken to safeguard the delicate environmental balance typical of a river, and to rationalize the use of natural resources. Spoil management, in terms of amounts and recovery/recycling methods of the materials, if well and carefully planned, can make a difference to the actual sustainability of the work. The most important issue as regards sustainability has to do with the interference of the works with the river and how the river is protected, since the tunnels will, in fact, pass under the Isarco river with low overburden. Planning optimizations were executed in agreement with the pertinent authorities as part of the complex authorization procedures carried out by the contracting authority, in constructive cooperation with all the actors involved.
