ABSTRACT

Air pollution is regarded as one of the highest priorities in environmental protection in both developed and developing countries. Air pollution is a serious and growing problem, particularly in rapidly expanding cities like Cairo, where pollution levels exceed allowable thresholds. High levels of air pollution have adverse effects on human health which might cause premature death. If any cost arises as a result of pollution, the cost is usually borne by individuals that were harmed, rather than the emitting facility. Underground constructions, especially Metro lines, significantly contribute in saving the adverse effects of air pollutants generated from other surface transport. This study presents the estimate of social costs of adverse human health effects resulting from ambient air pollution. The study describes the measuring and valuing the impacts of air pollution on health. The study shows the monetary values of health damages that have been avoided as a result of construction of Cairo Metro.
