ABSTRACT

The Terzo Valico railway line project produces excavation material for around 14.000.000 cubic meters. The Italian Ministry Decree n. 161/2012 regulates the management of surplus excavated material. This latter requires a specific design plan called “excavated soils use plan” (also reported as “plan of use”) to define methods, means, routing and final destinations of the excavated material in excess. This must be submitted to the Italian Ministry of the Environment for its approval. Excavation materials management strategy for Terzo Valico is reported in the present paper. Quarry sites reclamation is a technique mostly employed, which is beneficial for the environment and landscape of territories involved by the new line works.
