ABSTRACT

The new railway line extends for about 53 km, 36 of which in underground and, partially, excavated by TBM-EPB mechanized method. Such a method requires the usage of ground conditioning agents to improve the muck fluidity. The excavated material is then dumped on the ground and disposed in layers, a conventional industrial practice which allows both drying and the natural bio-degradation of the additives below the reference threshold as defined by specific ecotoxicological trials.

Once the material is compliant with the environmental quality requirements and the aforesaid thresholds it can be managed as a reusable resulting material in accordance to the Ministerial Decree 161/2012.
