ABSTRACT

Current situation, legal and political conditions and development of the first road tunnel project. Guatemala, Central America (17.57 million inhabitants 1 , $10.94 billion budget 2 ) demonstrates a pattern of economic, administrative and social concentration in the capital city of Guatemala. The annual net growth of 7% of vehicles in Guatemala 3 , is an alarming figure of 5.5 million people circulating on the metropolitan area 4 . This trend contrasts with the growth of 1% of the city’s road network 5 and the non-existent alternative of mass transit systems. The result is a daily collapse of vehicles and public traffic.
