ABSTRACT

Shortage of existing land resources and limitation of boundary expansion become challenges on campus in China. Rational use of underground space on campus and surroundings becomes an important trend for sustainability in traditional and new built campuses. As a famous traditional campus in China, Tsinghua University set up a research project on the use of underground space on its main campus. Developing and integrating the key massif and the underground space can effectively increase supply of stock space resources, avoid additional contradictions caused by the aboveground construction alone, and improve campus functions. Responding the planning of city transportation of which an underground road and Metro line 15 of Beijing city will pass the main campus, a concept of underground space use inside the campus connecting the urban underground traffic line and campus garages is developed, which will relieve the internal and peripheral maneuvers of the main campus of Tsinghua University.
