ABSTRACT

TBMs are widely utilized in urban areas, however, keeping ground movements at minimal rates in the areas with complex geological conditions require comprehensive preliminary studies and calculations with very sensitive excavation procedures. For avoiding ground or volume loss, which is the main cause of surface settlements, TBM chamber pressure must be kept under control, however, it is not the only important parameter and many other excavation parameters are related with settlements such as excavated muck volume. This paper shows relations between TBM excavation parameters, geological conditions and surface settlements. To investigate the relations, the data obtained from the excavation of Mecidiyekoy-Mahmutbey Metro Line was used. Excavation parameters of 3 TBMs were compared with settlement data obtained from the surface measurement stations. For each geological zone, corresponding settlement curve was calculated. Measured settlements from the settlement stations of that impact zone were then compared with TBM excavation parameters for each ring.
