ABSTRACT

The paper presents a case study of a deep excavation constructed in the city center. The excavation is bounded on three sides by existing historic tenement houses and on the fourth side by a subway line. Detailed FEM 2D analysis of an impact of the designed deep excavation on the structures adjacent to it has been performed. The jet-grouting method of strengthening of the ground below the foundations of the tenement houses was proposed based on these analyses. The results of a second stage numerical FEM analysis including the soil reinforcement were compared with the measurement results of the vertical displacements of the tenement houses. Conclusions related to the impact of the deep excavation on the existing buildings are presented. Discussion on the technologies used in this context (i.e. the methods of supporting the walls of the excavation and reinforcing of the foundation) is also included in the summary section.
