ABSTRACT

Large-diameter (with diameter above 12m) shield tunneling underwater usually encounters more difficulties compared with small-section tunnels. Maliuzhou Traffic Tunnel in Zhuhai is the third major link between Hengqin Island and the mainland, which will put an end to the isolation problem in typhoon seasons. This linkage is able to promote tourism in Zhuhai and the long-term development of the city and can also help saving human lives in extreme climates. Meanwhile, the construction of the Maliuzhou Traffic Tunnel has conquered the challenges in designing and building an extra-large shield tunnel in composite ground and undersea circumstances. This paper introduces the construction strategies and main technical innovations in this project. The designing methods and constructing approaches used in this project will provide theoretical support and technical guidance to similar projects.
