ABSTRACT

Since 1996 FSI (Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane – Italian State Railway) was the first client in Italy to set up a team of archaeologists, for the purpose of encouraging a new approach to the archaeological theme. Archeology becomes an essential step in the design process of the strategic infrastructures, bringing new awareness and sensitivity about the sustainability of transport networks, which transform the surrounding environment. This new approach has a double purpose: to increase the Italian transport infrastructure network and to preserve and enhance the archaeological heritage. During the works of the underground construction for the High-Speed line, a significant part of the eastern suburbia of the ancient Rome was discovered. A suburban necropolis – one of the largest found in the last decades – has been excavated together with a part of the via Collatina. Once again along, the investigations unearthed one of the largest fullonicae, a unique complex for extension, plan and conditions.
