ABSTRACT

All the underground infrastructures require a specific level of geological and geotechnical knowledge usually based on the common practice, on the Country laws and on the Design Level. The actual level of data recommended for a metro project in an urbanised area is an important technical and financial issue to be analysed in comparison with the already available information and the needs of the design level. Besides the geotechnical investigations carried out can considerably decrease all the geological and geotechnical potential risks. The comparison of the amount of investigations carried out before the tender, during the design and in the construction phase reflects well the efforts to ensuring a safe and economical tunnel construction process. The analysis of the Rumanian standard requirements for the geotechnical investigations and the case history of the engineering geology and geotechnical assessment particularly for “Metro Bucharest, Line 4 Extension” Project is discussed.
