ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the implementation of a two-tier security scheme in a MANET that is incorporated into a checkpointing and rollback recovery protocol used for fault tolerance. An integration of security and fault tolerance schemes is challenging, but we postulate that it will deal with the major concerns of using mobile devices for computations while minimizing the overheads. The work presented in discusses ad hoc networks and their computing models that require secure protocols. A classification of threats and attacks common in MANETs is provided along with a discussion regarding available tools for analyzing the performance of a given security protocol. The chapter presents a secure rollback recovery protocol that utilizes erasure coding-based checkpointing technique. The performance of the presented scheme is an evaluated by analyzing the recoverability of a node with the application of the secure checkpointing scheme.
