ABSTRACT

Fish farming sector of aquaculture is the fastest growing food producing sector. Intensification to maximize production results in disease outbreak; and common disease management uses veterinary medicines like antibiotics and another chemotherapeutic. The misuse creates antimicrobial resistance, causing a serious threat to the entire humanity. This threat can be overcome using probiotics. Probiotics are healthy microorganisms and substances, which contribute to intestinal microbial balance. Solid-state fermentation using locally available agricultural residue as major feed ingredient supports the growth of probiotics and therefore it can be employed for the formulation of functional feeds. The formulation, steady supply and daily administration of probiotic-based functional feed are a safe method for disease prevention, management of aquaculture. Various other functions due to use of probiotics in aquaculture are: growth promotion, inhibition to pathogens, and improvement in nutrient digestion, immunity, and water quality. In addition to probiotics, the administration of prebiotics, synbiotics, and cobiotics in aquaculture as dietary supplement boosts the functional property of the feed and promotes environment-friendly aquaculture.
