ABSTRACT

From the conservation perspective, protected areas are important particularly in the efforts to preserve biodiversity, protect the ecosystem and ensure the quality of the environment. This chapter highlights the different dimensions of value perceived by the local people in Taman Negara National Park and the evolution of these values throughout times. A value of parks generally refers to the attribute or quality of physical features available within the area. In protected areas, economic values are tangible because it helps sustain the livelihood of the local community around the park through the various employment opportunities protected areas provide. In terms of recreational value, a park is of significant value for the local people as the recreational activities provided helped society to enhance self-esteem, increased social cohesiveness, cognitive development and more. Taman Negara National Park is located in the heart of Peninsular Malaysia encompassing three neighboring states namely Pahang, Kelantan, and Terengganu.
