ABSTRACT

This narrative chapter presents the author’s experiences with designing and implementing an inclusive research internship program in the learning sciences. Two cohorts of students joined active research labs for six weeks, and participated in professional development activities related to careers, writing, and identity. Interns found the program to be inspiring, empowering, transformative, and validating. Such experiences are important for women and people of color because academia can seem unwelcoming for students from underrepresented and marginalized backgrounds. Supporting and encouraging our students is critically important as the country wrestles with increasing instances of bias, bigotry, and social justice on a national scale.
