ABSTRACT

In this narrative chapter, the author describes taking on a new, senior university administration role regarding equality, diversity, and inclusion. To promote an environment that supports equity across gender, racial and ethnic backgrounds, LGBTQ identities, disability status, and more, the author draws upon extensive experience in human factors and ergonomics (HFE). Key lessons and recommendations pertain to participation, combining qualitative and quantitative data, evaluative design and behavior, and adopting a systems approach. HFE principles of inclusion and participation in design and organizational change offer an excellent base for building an ambitious and effective EDI strategy.
