ABSTRACT

SMP/CHEM technology shows great promise for a host of biomedical applications [1]. The unique attributes, biocompatibility, and other properties of CHEM materials make them a worthy technology for self-deployable stents and other medical products. These materials have unique characteristics that enable the manufacture of medical devices not currently possible. The CHEM technology can be developed and utilized for minimally invasive application during surgical procedures where the material can expand and develop post-insertion for vascular coronary devices, dental applications, and self-reinforcing polymers as sutures. CHEM applications may usher in an era of simple, low-cost self-deployable medical devices. The CHEM technologists believe that SMP/CHEM materials will significantly and positively impact the medical device industry. Several CHEM medical applications successfully examined experimentally would save human lives. Some SMP/CHEM medical applications investigated with encouraging results are revealed in following chapters.
