ABSTRACT

The bespoke design possibilities of shape-shifting structures and objects is nothing new and makes dream even further. The use of shape memory materials (SMMs) can be found in small-scale applications, but changes in scale can have unsurpassable concerns. Manufacturing cellular skeletons are complex and hard to produce in an economical way with classic production methods such as molding systems. They often result in too many mold parts. No matter how mind-bending the smart material technology is (micro-level) it needs to be lightweight on the macro-level of the object. Reflecting on the unique properties that can transform itself from the temporary shape into the permanent shape, the creation of the temporary shape is an extra production step. Efficiency in manufacturing may be gained from the material itself, as the material itself can be used as a creative driver for novel manufacturing and new construction processes.
