ABSTRACT

There have been many scientific investigations that have established the importance and the contribution of many plant families used as medicinal plants. The medicinal values of these plants are due to some phytochemicals that create a distinct effect on the normal functioning of a living organism. However, as much as the natural medicine is generating a lot of attention from both practical and scientific viewpoints, the mechanism of action of local herbal medicines and related products from nature is actually multifac-eted than a mechanistic explanation of a single bioactive factor. Since many of these traditional herbs contribute significantly to the development of new drugs, it is necessary to identify the active compounds and standardize such bioactive extracts. The identified bioactive extract should equally go through the safety studies. This chapter presents a review that deals with the impact and present scenario of phytomedicine in the society with the purpose of highlighting the importance of phytochemistry knowledge in herbal formulations and regulations.
