ABSTRACT

Ethnoveterinary practices involve the application of traditional knowledge of medicinal plants for the primary healthcare of domestic animals. Medicinal plants contain various chemical compounds which possess important therapeutic properties that can be used in the treatment of ailments like anthrax, corneal opacity, dysentery, dyspepsia, ephemeral fever, gout, horn cancer, maggot, rheumatism, retained placenta, trypanosomiasis, and tympany, besides problems like anorexia, boils, bone fracture, constipation, insect bite, and snakebite are being treated by the folklore knowledge. Studies on medicinal plant species used in folklore remedies have attracted scientists in finding solutions for the problems of multiple resistances to the existing synthetic antibiotics. Plants which seem unique for certain animal diseases need research and conservation. In this chapter, data were summarized on plant species used for ethnoveterinary practices in different geographical regions of India. Their mode of administration/preparation, parts used, and ailments it cures were also presented.
