ABSTRACT

Elemental analysis is a technique that either identifies and/or quantifies specific elements in matter. It involves the understanding of the nature of the elements, appropriate sample preparation techniques, analytical methods, and tools. Elements are the simplest form of matter that cannot be broken further. The most common of these are metals which are categorized according to their properties. The body’s proper functioning requires metal elements called minerals at different levels for different functions and plants are their good natural sources. However, among the elements found in the plants and their phytomedicinal products are sometimes heavy metals that are toxic. It is therefore critical to establish the nature of elements and the amount present. These studies require proper techniques to minimize errors and avoid misinterpretation which could potentially be hazardous. This chapter puts together essential techniques in the elemental profiling of plants and plant products with a focus on inorganic metal elements and a brief introduction to techniques for organic elements.
