ABSTRACT

Esophageal diverticula are uncommon outpouchings of the lumen that can occur at any level of the esophagus. The most common esophageal diverticulum is a Zenker diverticulum located in the cervical esophagus. They can also be found in the midesophagus near the pulmonary hilum or in the distal 10 cm of esophagus, where they are termed epiphrenic diverticula. Esophageal diverticula are often asymptomatic; however, when they do result in symptoms, resection is warranted. Open and minimally invasive approaches have been described; however, only epiphrenic diverticula are typically approached via the abdomen, and thus are the focus of this chapter.
