ABSTRACT

Scour is one of the main causes of structural stability failure. Keen issues for the scour are how to monitor bridge scour during river flood and how to evaluate the soundness of structural stability of the bridge pier. A long-term monitoring method thus has been considered to cope with these issues by means of vibration-monitoring of bridge pier in real-time. The target frequency of railway bridge pier was identified utilizing train induced vibration in a normal condition. Ambient vibrations are also measured during a flood event. The vibration characteristics of the piers before and after the reinforcement are investigate. Observations for the bridge pier before reinforcement demonstrated that the probability distribution of dominant frequencies under higher water level during flood showed clearly different pattern to those under lower water level. On the other hand, those probability distributions of dominant frequencies of the reinforced pier showed constant pattern despite of the water level.
