ABSTRACT

Developing a civil or structural engineering curriculum always is a delicate process involving many people under considering and balancing different interests and demands. Especially, the employability must be kept in mind to qualify graduates for an engineering job. Today, everyday work live of civil and structural engineers is not only dominated by solving complex technical problems but also by legal issues. In Germany, various laws and rules of public and private law are to obey in construction projects. A breach of these rules or regulations will result in a corresponding penalty or in a lawsuit. To offer law courses under significant reduction of engineering contents cannot be a solution. The paper concerns with the question whether and to what extent law courses should be included in civil or structural engineering education. It gives advises, how to include law contents in education without losing too much time for subject specific courses.
