ABSTRACT

By developing the importance of fashion (a phenomenon that is significant nowadays), research in fashion, its history and the issues of gender, ascends the reflection on genderless clothing. Clothing is one of the most visible forms of consumption, and it performs a major role in the social construction of identity. (Crane 2000) In this paper we focus on the specific area of genderless clothing, having in mind the importance of gender issues nowadays. Simmel, stated in his famous 1905 essay, fashion is both a way to a sense of uniformity, as well as a form of distinction. Also, this is a proposal to explore genderless clothing and pursues to understand if it is just a trend, or it is becoming a paradigm. In this context, we pretend to analyse unisex clothing and arises the necessity of understanding the representations of men and women in garments.
