ABSTRACT

The number of LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) significantly increased from time to time. In the countries such as the US, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Canada, Denmark, New Zealand, and Taiwan, LGBT has been legally acknowledged; meanwhile it is the opposite in the other countries (including Indonesia). This article studies the phenomenon of LGBT, its emerging factors, discrimination towards LGBT and its solution. The study is carried out upon the review of literature and uses content analysis of videos about LGBT posted on https://www.aclu.org/issues/lgbt-right. The LGBT phenomenon took place due to various causes. The factors causing someone to become LGBT can be classified into factors of environment, family, and genetics. The forms of discrimination experienced by LGBT encompass discrimination in education, job, economy, health service, access to justice, use of public facilities, sexual assault, domestic violence, and harassment of the community members. LGBT experienced various forms of discrimination breaking its basic right as humans. Accordingly, LGBT is still afar from justice as mankind. Public-based counseling services are necessarily carried out to prevent LGBT phenomenon from spreading and simultaneously attempt to cure it. Family defense needs to be reinforced and social media are utilized as media for disseminating information about LGBT to public.
